Becoming a Tutor
Once you become a Motown Mercy volunteer tutor, we will match you with a student and their parent or guardian based on the student’s academic needs, the subjects or grade levels you feel comfortable helping with, and the number of hours you would like to volunteer. After the match is made, you and the parent or guardian will work together to choose meeting days and times that fit both of your schedules. Tutoring sessions will usually take place online through Zoom or another approved video platform, allowing you to support students in a flexible and convenient way. During each session, you will help the student with the subjects they need support in, such as math, reading, writing, science, or homework help. Volunteers are expected to be patient, encouraging, respectful, and consistent while helping create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence. Important details such as communication expectations, online safety guidelines, parent/guardian involvement, session structure, and any additional volunteer requirements will be explained further in an onboarding email or meeting before tutoring begins.
